Culture is like an iceberg – 9/10ths of it lie beneath the surface. This hidden area underlies our behavior, influences our perceptions and is outside our immediate frame of reference – until we plunge beneath the surface – or perhaps like the Titanic, encounter it unexpectedly.

So very true Barry. The more I experience life, the more I realize how true that is for so many things. This actually allows a strategy in problem solving that is otherwise unavailable. When we are presented with a solution to a problem there are commonly a number of options available. I prefer to recognize that those options are in fact malleable if the depth of the issue is explored. Kobayashi Maru.

The trick is to recognize the cultural influence and not let it interfere with or supplant the principles of human rights and dignity of personhood we afford others.

That’s the trick, but how many people know how to perform it?
