Yesterday afternoon two blog posts appeared on my WordPress Reader within an hour of each other, both of which had a gun control theme – both worthy of reblogging IMHO. The second post to arrive was this one by Bill Peddie.
BILL’S NOTES (which were supplemented with handout fact sheets) Why Gun Crime Should Matter – a reflection from New Zealand by Bill Peddie Just a short while ago, in the middle of the night, a perfectly normal looking home, just down the road from where Shirley and I live, was apparently the recipient of a […]BILL PEDDIE’S TALK TO MANGERE ROTARY, 14 JUNE 2022 — Bill Peddie’s website

I just checked and it says it is still “awaiting moderation”. Here is what I commented: “You are spot on about the gun situation here in the U.S. The gun manufacturer’s lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA) literally buys members of Congress. One congressman, Mitt Romney, has taken over $13 million from the NRA and all he has to do for that money is vote against any meaningful gun legislation. There are many more … almost every one members of the Republican Party … who have taken millions of dollars to silence their voices. Meanwhile, there has not been a single week this year without one or more mass shootings, and in the first 5.5 months of 2022, we have had over 250 mass shootings. Grocery stores, schools, hospitals, and churches … no place is safe in the United States today. Meanwhile, the bill that was passed in the Senate, that Senators are bragging about, is a big piece of nothing. It has no teeth. It doesn’t ban or regulate in any way the military-grade assault rifles that can mow down a hundred people in about 3 minutes. It doesn’t EVEN raise the age to buy one to 21 … a teenager can buy an AR-15! And it doesn’t do much in any area, but the Senators are patting themselves on the back for the appearance of having done something. Now, couple the severe gun crisis we have with the level of political divisiveness, and it’s a recipe for disaster. Stay tuned.”
